The Short Wilderness Trail offers a perfect weekend escape into the iMfolozi Wilderness Area, designed for those wanting a genuine bush experience in a shorter timeframe. This fully guided trail runs from February to December, departing on Fridays and Sundays, and is ideal for travellers looking to experience the tranquillity and beauty of South Africa’s oldest proclaimed game reserve.

Over 2 nights and 3 days, trailists explore the wilderness on foot with experienced Trails Officers and Field Guides, staying in simple dome tented camps deep within the park. The focus is on walking safaris, nature appreciation, and reconnecting with the wild.

All meals are provided and prepared by the trails team. Trailists carry only a daypack containing personal essentials, while food and supplies are transported to the wilderness camp. The experience follows a “minimum impact, no-trace” principle to preserve the pristine environment.

This short trail is a great introduction to wilderness hiking, offering the adventure, stillness, and connection of a multi-day trail, but in a compact and comfortable weekend format.

Tour Itinerary

Arrive at Mpila Resort by 11h00 for registration and meet your Trails Officer and Field Guide. After a short trail briefing at 11h30, pack your belongings and prepare for your walk to the wilderness satellite camp, located approximately 4–7 km away.

Enjoy your packed lunch along the route as your guide introduces you to the park’s flora, fauna, and the history of the iMfolozi Wilderness Area. On arrival at camp, settle into your dome tent, each equipped with two mattresses, and relax in the tranquil bush surroundings.

As evening approaches, enjoy a warm shower under the stars using the traditional bucket system before gathering around the fire for a wholesome dinner prepared by the trails team.

Wake up early to the sounds of the bush and enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting off on your guided wilderness walk. Walk through a variety of terrains while your Trails Officer and Field Guide share insights about animal tracks, birdlife, and the ecosystem of the park.

You’ll carry a light daypack with water and lunch, stopping midday for a picnic-style meal and a short rest in the shade. The total distance covered may range between 7–15 km, depending on conditions and sightings.

Return to camp in the late afternoon to unwind, enjoy a bucket shower, and share the evening with your fellow trailists around the campfire.

After an early breakfast, take a final morning walk through the wilderness, soaking in your last views of the iMfolozi landscape.

Trailists return to Mndindini Base Camp on foot, a relaxed walk of several kilometres through the park. The trail concludes around 10h30, when you’ll bid farewell to your guides and fellow travellers.
