Tour Overview
The Primitive Trail offers a true wilderness experience in the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy backpacking and sleeping under the stars. This fully guided trail focuses on simple living, self-sufficiency, and immersion in nature.
Trailists spend four nights and five days (or an optional three nights and four days) in the iMfolozi Wilderness Area, walking through a variety of natural landscapes while carrying their own equipment and food. There are no fixed camps or facilities on this trail. All camping is done in the open, following a strict minimum impact and no-trace approach.
Water is collected from springs or rivers, and bathing takes place in the river where possible. Meals are prepared by the Trails Officer, Field Guide, and trailists over open fires. The trail requires a reasonable level of fitness as participants carry their own backpacks and cover moderate walking distances each day. All equipment and food are supplied, and a packing list is provided before arrival.
The Primitive Trail operates from mid-February to mid-November and can accommodate a maximum of eight trailists, with a minimum of six required for departure. It begins and ends at Mpila Resort, where registration and pre-departure briefing take place before heading into the wilderness.

Tour Itinerary
Arrive at Mpila Resort by 09h00 to check in and meet your Trails Officer and Field Guide. You’ll receive a full briefing about the trail and assistance with packing your backpack. Essential equipment and food supplies will be divided among the group.
After the briefing, the group sets off on foot into the iMfolozi Wilderness Area, carrying everything needed for the trail. Your guides will select a campsite in the bush, where you’ll help prepare dinner and sleep under the stars for the first time.
Wake to the sounds of the wild and enjoy a light breakfast before heading out on a full day of hiking through the iMfolozi Wilderness. The group will walk through open savannah, along riverbeds and through dense thickets, with plenty of opportunities to observe wildlife, birds, and plant life.
Water is collected from springs or rivers along the way, and lunch is enjoyed in a shaded resting spot. As the sun sets, set up camp in a new area and assist in preparing a shared meal over the campfire.
Spend another full day exploring the untouched wilderness on foot. Walk at a steady pace, stopping to appreciate the smaller details of the bush – animal tracks, insects, bird calls and plants.
Midday offers time to rest beside a river, where you can cool off with a swim before continuing your journey. In the evening, gather around the fire for dinner and your fire watch shift, a peaceful and reflective experience under the stars.
After breakfast, continue deeper into the wilderness or enjoy a shorter walk depending on the group’s pace and terrain. This day focuses on quiet appreciation and connection with the natural surroundings.
Set up your final bush camp, share stories with fellow trailists, and enjoy your last evening meal around the fire. As night falls, take in the silence and solitude of your last night in the wild.
Wake early for your final morning in the bush. After a light breakfast and short walk, the group returns to Mndindini Base Camp, arriving around 10h00.
Enjoy a snack, freshen up, and say farewell to your guides and fellow trailists before beginning your journey home.
