Tour Itinerary

Arrive at Mpila Resort by 13h00 to check in and complete park formalities. You’ll then drive to the Mndindini Trails Camp, where your vehicle will remain safely parked during your stay.

Meet your Trails Officer, Field Ranger, and camp cook, who will welcome you and conduct a trail briefing at 14h00. You’ll receive important information about the hiking schedule, safety, and wilderness etiquette.

After the briefing, you may choose to join an afternoon walk or relax at camp before dinner. Enjoy your first evening around the campfire, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.

Begin your first full day on the trail with an early breakfast before setting off on a guided hike through the Hluhluwe iMfolozi wilderness. Led by your Trails Officer and Field Ranger, walk through open plains, riverbeds, and wooded valleys while tracking wildlife and learning about the park’s unique ecosystem.

You’ll carry a daypack with water, lunch, and personal items. Depending on the terrain and sightings, the group will cover between 7 and 14 km.

Return to camp in the afternoon to relax, shower, and enjoy a wholesome dinner prepared by the camp cook.

After breakfast, head out on another full day of hiking and exploration through Big Five territory. Keep an eye out for elephants, buffalo, rhino, and a variety of antelope and bird species. Your Trails Officer will share insights into animal behaviour, tracks, and bush survival techniques.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, then continue your walk before returning to camp in the late afternoon. Relax, enjoy a warm shower, and gather around the campfire for your final evening in the wild.

Wake early for a short morning walk, soaking up your last moments in the iMfolozi wilderness. After returning to camp, enjoy a light breakfast and some time to pack up.

Depart from Mndindini Trails Camp by 11h00, taking with you unforgettable memories of your time walking among South Africa’s wildlife and pristine landscapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A moderate fitness level is required. Daily hikes range from 10–15 km, often over uneven terrain and small hills. The pace is relaxed with frequent rest stops, making it suitable for most reasonably active travellers.

Yes. The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Wilderness Trail takes place within a Big Five conservation area, home to elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, and buffalo, as well as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and countless bird species. Because the trail is conducted entirely on foot, sightings depend on the group’s movements, weather, and natural animal behaviour, making every walk unique and authentic.

Encounters with large game are always managed with care. Your safety is the top priority, and each walk is led by a qualified Trails Officer and an armed Field Ranger who are highly trained in tracking, bush safety, and animal behaviour. They will brief guests on how to behave in the presence of wildlife and ensure all walks are conducted at a respectful distance to avoid disturbance.

This approach offers a rare opportunity to experience the bush as early explorers once did, on foot, immersed in nature, and fully connected to the rhythms of the wild.

Bring lightweight neutral clothing, hiking boots, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a rain jacket (summer months). A small day pack and water bottle are supplied, but guests should carry personal items such as medication, snacks, and a torch.

Yes. Mndindini Trails Camp provides basic shared ablution facilities, including hot showers, flushing toilets, and washbasins. The camp is designed to be simple but practical, offering everything you need for a comfortable wilderness stay.

Trails operate in most conditions, but in the case of severe rain or thunderstorms, the walking schedule may be adjusted for safety. Rangers will make decisions based on real-time conditions and may replace longer walks with shorter excursions or educational bush sessions at camp.
