Tour Itinerary

Depart Windhoek between 08:00 and 08:45 for your journey south into the Kalahari Desert. The drive takes you through Namibia’s central highlands and open plains before reaching the 10,000-hectare Intu Afrika Kalahari Game Reserve, located approximately 250 kilometres from the capital.

The Kalahari, often called a fossil desert, is characterised by its red and clay dunes, scattered shrubs, and stretches of golden grassland. Despite its arid appearance, the region supports a wide range of wildlife including black wildebeest, springbok, oryx, giraffe, and meerkats. The area is also home to the indigenous !Kung people, whose survival techniques and traditional crafts reflect their deep connection to the desert environment.

Upon arrival, check in to your lodge nestled among the Camelthorn trees. In the late afternoon, join a shared sundowner drive organised by the lodge. This experience offers the opportunity to spot local wildlife such as antelope and zebra while enjoying panoramic views of the Kalahari’s distinctive red dunes and vast open spaces.

Return to the lodge for dinner and an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Intu Afrika Kalahari Game Reserve
Meals: Dinner

After breakfast, depart the Kalahari and begin your journey southwest toward Sossusvlei, one of Namibia’s most iconic destinations. The route passes through the scenic Khomas Hochland and down the escarpment via one of Namibia’s mountain passes, offering breathtaking views as the landscape transforms into the vast expanse of the Namib Desert.

The journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, with several opportunities to stop for photographs along the way, capturing the dramatic contrasts and ever-changing desert scenery.

En route, stop in the small desert settlement of Solitaire, an isolated outpost famous for its rustic charm and renowned apple pie. It serves as a welcome rest stop to refuel, stretch your legs, and enjoy the quiet atmosphere before continuing into the heart of the desert.

Arrive at your lodge in the Sossusvlei area during the late afternoon. The lodge is perfectly located for exploring the region’s towering dunes and striking desert landscapes.

Enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge and spend a peaceful evening under Namibia’s vast star-studded sky.

Overnight: Sossusvlei
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Start the day early to witness the magnificent sunrise over Sossusvlei, when the golden morning light casts dramatic shadows across the towering red dunes. The cool morning hours are ideal for a guided walk through the desert, with opportunities to spot wildlife such as gemsbok, springbok, and ostrich moving across the dunes.

Spend the morning exploring the highlights of Sossusvlei, home to some of the world’s tallest sand dunes and the remarkable salt and clay pans that define this landscape. Visit the famous Dead Vlei, where centuries-old camelthorn trees stand preserved against a backdrop of gleaming white earth and orange dunes—a truly iconic Namibian scene.

Stop at Dune 45, one of the most photographed dunes in the region. Rising over 170 metres, it offers a rewarding climb for those keen to take in sweeping views of the Namib Desert from its peak.

Enjoy lunch at Sossusvlei Lodge before continuing to Sesriem Canyon in the afternoon. This natural gorge, carved over millennia by the Tsauchab River, reveals fascinating rock formations and layers of ancient sediment.

Return to the lodge in the late afternoon to relax and take in the tranquil desert surroundings before dinner.

Overnight: Sossusvlei
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Depart after breakfast and travel northwest toward the coast, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn and passing through the scenic Gaub and Kuiseb Passes. As the route descends through Kuiseb Canyon and rises again toward the coastal plains, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape.

Stop in Walvis Bay to visit the lagoon, one of southern Africa’s most important wetlands and a haven for birdlife. Here, you may see flamingos, pelicans, and other coastal species feeding in the shallows. A short visit to the nearby salt works offers further insight into this unique ecosystem. Continue north along the coastal road to Swakopmund, where the golden dunes of the Namib Desert meet the cool Atlantic Ocean.

In the afternoon, take part in a desert rhino tracking excursion in the Torra Conservancy, led by experienced local trackers. This rare and unforgettable experience offers the chance to see the endangered black rhino in its natural habitat while learning about community-led conservation efforts protecting this remarkable species.

Arrive later at Palmwag Lodge, beautifully positioned along a palm-lined tributary of the Uniab River. The area is known for its unique palm trees (Hyphaene petersiana) and large populations of desert-adapted wildlife, including elephant, black rhino, giraffe, zebra, lion, cheetah, and antelope. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Overnight: Palmwag Lodge, Damaraland

Depart Damaraland after breakfast and travel northeast towards Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves. The journey passes through the small town of Kamanjab, with changing landscapes from rugged mountain scenery to open savannah plains.

Along the way, visit a traditional Himba village, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet one of the few remaining semi-nomadic tribes in Africa. Learn about the Himba people’s unique customs, traditional attire, and way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. This cultural visit offers valuable insight into one of Namibia’s most iconic communities.

Continue to your lodge situated just outside Etosha National Park’s southern entrance (Andersson’s Gate). Depending on arrival time, enjoy a late afternoon game drive inside the park, where you may spot elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, and other plains game gathering at the waterholes.
